CloudScape Discovery CMDB App Mapping APAC Region EMEA Region Cloud Economics App-Server Dependency Insurance & Professional Services

I led a global cloud migration assessment for one of the world's largest risk management and professional services firms, spanning their APAC and EMEA infrastructure footprints. The engagement centered on extracting and normalizing their CMDB application environment data — over 21,000 app-server mapping records — and integrating it with CloudScape-based server discovery to build a complete, accurate picture of the cloud migration scope across both regions.

The APAC scope covered approximately 1,800 servers across the Asia-Pacific region, while the EMEA economics model encompassed roughly 2,400 server entries. My work produced a clean, validated dataset linking application environments to their underlying server infrastructure, enabling accurate TCO modeling and cloud sizing for both regions.

APAC
~1,800
Servers discovered and mapped via CloudScape. Includes application environment tagging and performance profiling.
EMEA
~2,400
Server entries in economics model. TCO and cloud sizing produced for the EMEA migration scope.
Global CMDB
21,000+
App-server mapping records extracted from CMDB. Linked to CloudScape inventory for validated dependency analysis.

CMDB Source — What We Had

  • 21,000+ app environment-to-server mappings exported from CMDB
  • Application environment IDs, business unit classification, and hosting type attributes
  • Multi-hosting type apps (spanning on-premises, hosted, and cloud simultaneously)
  • Attested data with ownership metadata — critical for validating migration scope
  • Business unit segmentation: Reinsurance and commercial divisions separately tracked

CloudScape Integration — What We Built

  • APAC CloudScape import: ~884 validated server records linked to CMDB app environments
  • Hostname-to-environment-ID join to resolve server → application ownership
  • Cleaning pipeline to normalize CMDB encoding artifacts and deduplicate multi-hosted entries
  • Performance profile tags (CPU utilization, memory utilization) appended for rightsizing
  • Application tier and threat level metadata used for migration wave prioritization

APAC Cloud Economics

Built per-server cloud cost estimates for the APAC inventory using CloudScape rightsizing outputs — mapping each server to the optimal cloud instance type with reserved pricing applied.

EMEA Cloud Economics

Produced a parallel economics model for the EMEA scope covering ~2,400 server entries — providing the financial baseline for the EMEA migration business case.

Multi-Cloud Pricing

Economics model included pricing across multiple cloud providers to support the firm's internal cloud selection evaluation across regions with different hyperscaler preference profiles.

Business Unit Segmentation

Costs and server counts broken out by business unit using CMDB classification — enabling division-level migration budgeting and chargeback modeling.

Data Processing Pipeline

  • Python-based ETL to process and clean 21K+ row CMDB export (UTF-16 encoded, tab-delimited)
  • Fuzzy hostname matching to resolve discrepancies between CMDB server names and CloudScape scan results
  • Multi-value stack name parsing to handle servers serving multiple application environments
  • Deduplication logic to handle servers appearing in both APAC and EMEA scope files
  • Validated output used as master dataset for economics modeling and wave planning

CloudScape Deployment & Validation

  • Guided CloudScape deployment for APAC subnet scanning to capture all in-scope servers
  • Import file prepared from CMDB data to pre-populate application stack assignments
  • Validation pass to confirm CloudScape-discovered servers matched CMDB inventory
  • Out-of-scope server identification: servers in CMDB with no CloudScape discovery result flagged for manual review
  • Power BI dashboard prepared from CloudScape data for ongoing stakeholder reporting
01

CMDB Data Engineering

Built the processing pipeline to extract, clean, and normalize 21,000+ CMDB app-server mapping records — resolving encoding issues, deduplicating entries, and producing a join-ready master dataset.

02

CloudScape–CMDB Integration

Designed and executed the CloudScape-to-CMDB linkage for APAC — matching server hostnames to application environment IDs to create a validated inventory of what runs where.

03

APAC & EMEA Economics

Produced cloud economics models for both regions — per-server instance sizing and pricing to support the migration business case across APAC (~1,800 servers) and EMEA (~2,400 entries).

04

CloudScape Deployment Guidance

Guided the APAC CloudScape deployment — import file preparation, subnet scanning configuration, and validation of discovered results against the CMDB baseline.

05

Reporting & Stakeholder Deliverables

Prepared Power BI dashboards from CloudScape data and structured the migration slide deck showing regional scope, data quality findings, and cloud economics by business unit.
